Back to School? We’ve got your back

As the first term of the new academic calendar kicks off following a well-deserved summer break, we look back on some of the key ways All Set West has engaged with educators, students and graduates across the region over the past year.

Work in education and want to bring your students up to speed on potential careers in film and TV production, one of the fastest growing areas of the creative industries? Connect with us today.

Flying the flag for film/TV careers

At All Set West we’re passionate about supporting the next generation of crew from an early age, to ensure they have the tools and knowledge they need to get started in the industry.

One way we do this is by attending careers fairs and events across the region. In the 2024/25 academic year, we delivered activities in a number of schools on the doorstep of our base at The Bottle Yard Studios in South Bristol, whilst also venturing out to visit schools, colleges and universities in North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Bath and North-East Somerset.

Whatever the event or the location, visitors to our stand are invited to learn more about our favourite topic; how the film/tv production industry works in the West of England and the types of jobs available to entrants.

Tours behind studio doors

Another way that All Set West lifts the lid on the film industry for local young people is through educational tours of The Bottle Yard Studios, where we’re based. Over the past academic year we have enabled over 400 students across the region to step into this busy filming facility, as we draw back the curtain on what actually goes on in a buzzing production environment.

These tours help demystify what different jobs on a film or television set look like in practise, and participants get the chance to meet members of the studio operations team and hear more about working in the industry. Time after time students tell us they find the experience inspiring and informative.

Educators we work with can also book an extra careers talk for their students, which outlines some of the pathways available to new entrants and explains more about how All Set West supports and champions local talent.

Joining forces on special projects

In addition to educator-led group tours, we‘re also open to joining forces with educators on special projects and learning opportunities. For example, we recently partnered with Bristol education provider boomsatsuma on their work experience week in July 2025, by welcoming a group of Year 10 students as part of their week-long tour of media organisations.

The group, who were mostly local to the Bottle Yard here in South Bristol, benefitted from a workshop with BFI-funded initiative Into Film before dropping in on us at The Bottle Yard for their studio experience, then moving on to visit Bristol animation company A Productions and the Undershed exhibition space. Better still, the group video-documented their experience and the week culminated in a special screening event for their films!

Supporting talent showcases

In addition to direct outreach in schools, colleges and universities, you’ll also find our team attending local film-related events and screenings. This year for example, we’ve had the privilege of attending screenings for UWE Filmmaking and Bristol Film School’s degree courses, where the high calibre of work on display gave a taste of the outstanding creative graduate talent we’re home to in the West.

We also had the pleasure of taking part in an industry panel at Access Creative College alongside alumni from All Set West’s Training pilot year, who answered questions about working in the industry and access to opportunities. A big thanks to our friends at Into Film for the invite!

Informing the Curriculum

Finally, a vital part out of our educational outreach is the work we do to provide film/TV sector insights to educators themselves. Over the past year, we’ve participated in curricular forums with the likes of City of Bristol College, Weston College, St. Brendan’s Academy and South Gloucestershire and Stroud College, to underline the importance of including film and TV production in both curriculum content and career advice.

Be part of it

We believe that Educational and Community Outreach is essential to building a thriving workforce for the future, whatever the industry or the location.

That’s why we’re focused on building and strengthening bridges between educators, communities and the film/TV industry in the West of England. By working together we can ensure that diverse new talent from all backgrounds in the region can access the skills to succeed.
